After four years of intensive work, the successful completion of the BUCK 40 “reuse” project on Buckhauserstrasse in Zurich was achieved. As general planner, the project was accompanied from the initial concept idea through to completion, making a significant contribution to realizing a sustainable and forward‑looking solution.

The six‑storey commercial and industrial building was not newly constructed but transformed into a modern, versatile building through a resource‑conserving conversion. The existing load‑bearing structure of flat concrete slabs, columns, and stairwells was largely preserved.

The services as general planner included the planning and implementation of numerous innovative measures:

  • Reuse: Preservation and targeted supplementation of the robust building structure.

  • Reduce: Minimal material use through continued utilization of existing components.

  • Revalue: Architectural interventions that give the building a second life, such as the addition of an attic floor in modern timber construction.

Additional highlights were created with the green roof terrace featuring trees and shrubs, and the natural arcade on the fifth floor. A central courtyard, realized through ceiling cut‑outs from the ground floor upwards, further enhances the quality of stay and interaction within the building.

Thanks to comprehensive general planner services and close collaboration with ARGE Scheitlin Syfrig and OXID, the project was not only successfully implemented but also awarded the DGNB Gold certification – a hallmark of sustainable construction.
